Moncler Takes Us to the Beach for Their Spring Summer ’21 Genius Collection

“Into” is a series dedicated to objects, artworks, garments, exhibitions, and all orders of things that we are into — and there really isn’t a lot more to it than that. This week: Juliana Ukiomogbe dives into the sunny new Moncler collection helmed by Jonathan Anderson.

The British fashion label JW Anderson, founded by Jonathan Anderson, the creative director of the Spanish luxury house LOEWE, is back with their second collaboration with Moncler Genius. This time around, the Spring/Summer ’21 collection is called “A Nomadic Voyage.” Though many of us are still WFH, Moncler lets us imagine ourselves venturing outdoors and frolicking at the nearest beach, rum punch in hand.

To coincide with the launch, JW Anderson and Moncler are releasing a curated film playlist and podcast to match Anderson’s aesthetic and vision for this collection. In a partnership with the streaming service MUBI, the playlist includes films that toe the line between abstract and concrete. Depending on where you are in the world, the list includes: Swept Away (1974), Travel Songs (1981), Nomad (1982), Three Crowns of a Sailor (1983), Paris, Texas (1984), Vagabond (1985), The Green Ray (1986), The Sheltering Sky (1990), Disappearance at the Sea (1996), The Motorcycle Diaries (2004), Winter Nomads (2012), Further Beyond (2016), and I Am Not a Witch (2017). The selection ranges from understated art house films to world-renowned travel epics. Whether you’re longing for your next vacation or simply want to travel from your living room, there’s something for everyone.

While the films provide the visuals, the first installment in the Moncler Genius Podcast series offers the auditory counterpart to the collection. Available on Spotify and launched as a virtual salon, the podcast brings together the most innovative minds in the fashion world to discuss the stuff that matters. In the first episode, the host Hans Ulrich Obrist (the Director of the Serpentine Galleries) dissects Anderson’s journey as a designer and delves into the theme of travel in this year’s collection. Come for the fashion; stay for the wanderlust.
