Happy Valentine’s Day From the Lovers of Interview

Valentine's

This Valentine’s Day, we’re revisiting our favorite duos from the archives as proof that love comes in many forms. Whether you’re coupled up or still waiting on the Selena to your Benny, this is a reminder that love does in fact still exist, even when the world feels bleak as ever.

KEANU REEVES & RIVER PHOENIX

NOVEMBER 1991

Valentine's

REEVES: I really would like to do Shakespeare with River. I think we’d have a hoot. We could do A Midsummer Night’s Dream or Romeo and Juliet.

PHOENIX: I’ll be Juliet.

SELENA GOMEZ & BENNY BLANCO

MARCH 2025

Valentine's

BLANCO: She’s like my fucking heroin and Xanax combined. Whenever I’m feeling anything but perfect, she knows the exact thing to say. I’m so pissed that it took this long. It’s like, “How did we not figure this out sooner?” I’m 36 years old.

GOMEZ: Timing is everything.

ANTHONY PERKINS & BARRY BERENSON

JANUARY 1974

Valentine's

KATIE KELLY: We decided at that moment to find a really sad movie and go together and cry. “So what movie shall we see?” he [Perkins] said.

———

JOAQUIN PHOENIX & LIV TYLER

APRIL 1997

Valentine's

TYLER: Pat [O’Connor, director of Inventing The Abbotts] called me one day and said, “I met this guy, and I think he’s fantastic. I’d love for you to meet him. His name’s Joaquin Phoenix.” I was like, “Oh my God, why didn’t I ever think of that? That is perfect.” And I just fainted on my hands and knees.

PHOENIX: When casting directors get desperate, I come in and they go, “Okay, we need somebody so you’ll do.”

MEG AND JACK WHITE

MAY 2003

MEG WHITE: I’ve always kind of lived in my own world. Everything else outside me seems far, far away.

JACK WHITE: When do I get a copy of the key to your world, Meg? [Meg laughs]

———

BEN AFFLECK & MATT DAMON

DECEMBER 1997

Ben Affleck

DAMON: Ben’s too modest to tell you this, but he’s the most well-read person I know. He’s certainly a lot smarter than I am.

AFFLECK: That’s why we stayed friends: because we lie for each other in crucial moments. It gets you through a development meeting, I can tell you that.

ANJELICA HUSTON & JACK NICHOLSON

APRIL 1974

NICHOLSON: I met Anjelica at my house in L.A. about a year ago. She’s really very shy and retiring, a creative lady who has a big, bold style. And that style thing works when she’s in front of a camera. She is the only girl I know who has a reasoned head considering who she is. A career is not so important to her. She’s not that ambitious. Oh I mean, she was once ambitious enough to become a super good model. I’m just happy that she likes to relax with me.

HUSTON: Oh god…What do I like about Jack? He makes me laugh. No, you know what it is about Jack? Really? You just don’t meet men like Jack Nicholson nowadays.

———

BIJOUX PHILIPPS, RODRIDO FREIRE & CHRISTINA RICCI

FEBRUARY 1994

PETER GALVIN: That’s a healthy attitude. What do you think about when you imagine yourself getting older?

RICCI: It’s kind of scary. If you get really old-like they show those people on the Today show who are the friends you had who were the same age as you are dead. I mean, all your friends die; people you love die.

———

COURTNEY WAGNER & STEPHEN DORFF

MAY 1993

WAGNER: He asked me out. I was too shy to ask anyone out. I think I might’ve been prejudiced against actors before I dated Stephen, but I was so… How would you describe yourself?

DORFF: Charming?

WAGNER: Well, yeah, that, but I was so shy and you were so overbearing that you would never expect us to be together.

DORFF: I was like, Do you want a drink? Aren’t you going to give me a good-night kiss?

WAGNER: But you were different.

———

KATE MOSS & DEVON AOKI

OCTOBER 1999

KARL PLEWKA: How do you protect yourself?

MOSS: I try to be around people that I love. Or that love me. It’s instinct, really. I don’t think that you can do anything but trust everyone that you allow to be around you.

ANITA SARKO: Kate has kind of adopted you, right?

AOKI: She’s always been super sweet to me. She is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met in my life, and I’m not just saying that. When I first started modeling I felt kind of awkward. And she would always make me feel really comfortable. I couldn’t say a bad word about her, because it wouldn’t be true.

———

DREW BARRYMORE AND JAMES WALTERS

JULY 1992

INGRID SISCHY: What did you two do on your first date?

WALTERS: We were both nervous about it. I picked her up at her house. We were going to see the original Beauty and the Beast.

BARRYMORE: It’s my favorite film in the whole world. It was showing one night in L.A., but we couldn’t find the theatre.

WALTERS: So we ended up getting something to eat and taking a long walk on the beach. We stayed up all night, sitting and talking.

MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY & ASHLEY JUDD

AUGUST 1996

Matthew McConaughey

JUDD: I will greet this day with love in my heart.
