The Papi Juice Collective Get Us Pumped Up for Pride With a Playlist

Adam R, Mohammed Iman, and Oscar Nñ of Papi Juice for Coach Pride.

This is SOUND ADVICE, a weekly destination for playlists curated by Interview’s friends, enemies, and lovers. Over the past few weeks, we’ve gathered playlists by Mike SabathRick Owens, and Daniel Fisher, a.k.a. Physical Therapy. This week, we asked the stars of Coach’s latest Pride campaign—Oscar Nñ, Mohammed Iman, and Adam R, of Brooklyn’s hot and sexy collective Papi Juice—to build us a rainbow-flavored playlist. This year, the Coach Foundation celebrates a decade of supporting the LGBTQ agenda by donating proceeds to safe havens like the Hetrick-Martin Institute, the Point Foundation, and Center Link: The Community of LGBTQ Center. Who better to lead the campaign (and model bags and crop tops aptly decorated with the logos of infamous Fire Island businesses like Belvedere Guest House for Men, Cherry’s, and Pines Pantry) than Oscar, Mohammed, and Adam, alongside other muses of New York City nightlife like Alaska Riley and Xunami Muse. The capsule collection also features tank tops, sandals, and bags with rainbow stripes motifs and Coach’s signature monogram pattern. As we steel ourselves for the four-week marathon that is Pride, the trio curated a “Pride Reset” playlist and answered our Sound Advice questionnaire, revealing who, once and for all, is “Mother”—and their post-Pride recovery routines (electrolytes or vacation, they suggest).

Where do you dance? For someone in nightlife, I’m actually not much of a dancer. But I love dancing in the DJ booth with my friends when I’m djing or when they are.

What’s on your bedroom playlist? NTS’ infinite loop mixtapes.

Fuck, marry, kill: YouTube, TikTok, Instagram? Kill Instagram because it’s toxic, fuck TikTok because she’s fun in bed and late at night, and marry YouTube because it’s an endless well of knowledge!

Bluetooth or wired headphones? Wired for DJing reasons.

What is your pride beauty tip? Drinking lots of water and Aesop’s Lucent facial concentrate serum.

What was your first concert? Shakira’s first tour in 1996 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras!

What song on this playlist, if any, makes you cry? Arca, “Ritual.”

Name your favorite queer artist no one knows about. People definitely know about them but I wanna say Crystallmess here. They’re such an amazing multi-disciplinary artist and I love everything they do.

Who throws the sexiest party in New York City? I’m gonna say I do 🙂 Don’t wanna get in trouble with anyone.

What’s your favorite club? Love our NYC club family: Elsewhere, Nowadays, Bossa, Mood Ring.

What defines a Papi? Confident, softness, and a point of view.

What do you play when you want to feel charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent? Something with a lot of drums and some good bass!

What artist makes you think of Fire Island Pines? My dear friend z tye richardson because that’s where we met and collaborated for the first time.

Name one song you’re dying to hear at Tea? Any of the Mariah Carey 90s house remixes.

Who gets the Aux when you’re getting ready to go out/play a gig? I do!

What do you listen to when you’re high? I don’t smoke 🙁 But my friends at Juanita’s have a sweet mix series that are made to be listened to when high so I like putting them on when I’m chilling.

What’s your favorite movie needle-drop? Caetano Veloso’s rendition of Cucurrucucu Paloma in Almodovar’s “Talk to Her.”

What’s your biggest DJ-ing pet peeve? Obvious answer but requests! Also, mansplainy sound techs!

Favorite Pride memory? So many cute Papi Pride memories! Our friend Indya Moore hopping on stage and giving a speech in 2019, Princess Nokia crowd surfing after her performance in 2016, all of Juliana Huxtable’s DJ sets and how could I forget our sweet collab with Xaddy’s for Sydney World Pride earlier this year.
