Must-Have Summer Hair Trends

SOFIA VERGARA’S BEACHY WAVES.

From Cannes to the CFDA Awards, celebrities are sporting the same three hair trends: beachy waves, any variation of the updo, and the ponytail. While the latter two are classic hair staples, beachy waves have been around for fewer seasons—but they are, most definitely, the style to emulate. We asked celebrity hair stylist Jen Atkin of the Andy LeCompte Salon in Los Angeles for a breakdown of the three trends, what type of hair and face will look best with each style, and which celebrities are rocking them out.

Beachy Waves [as seen on Sofia Vergara, above]: “Beachy waves look great on medium to long hair, as well as most hair textures. It’s a hard to form the correct kind of wave with short hair. They are particularly popular right now because it’s an easy look to achieve. Humidity and heat often make hair frizzy and big, and that’s a good base for beachy hair.”

KATE BECKINSALE’S LITTLE BUN.

The Updo [as seen on Kate Beckinsale, above]: “Updos are great for going from daytime, dirty, or gym hair to an evening look. They also help to dress down a serious, formal look and make it look more modern. It’s an effortless look to compliment summer wardrobe trends, like floral maxi dresses. This style works on all face shapes, but longer faces should stay away from a high top-knot bun. Wide-set faces should put a few pieces down around the hairline. For oily hair, it’s best to choose a slick updo. For thicker hair, I prefer a low chignon.”

GISELE BÜNDCHEN’S PONYTAIL.

The Ponytail [as seen on Gisele Bündchen, above]: “Ponytails never go out of style.  They’re the perfect complement to a springtime flirty look, or can make an elegant evening look. They look best on an oval- or heart-shaped face and work well with medium to fine hair.”
