MEL OTTENBERG: All right. I’m here with Liv Tyler backstage at the fucking Loewe show.
LIV TYLER: It’s so exciting. I haven’t been to Paris in a really long time.
OTTENBERG: Okay, welcome.
TYLER: I’ve been in retirement hiding in the mountains of Ojai for a few years growing tangerines and olives.
OTTENBERG: Wow.
TYLER: I’ve become a farmer.
OTTENBERG: In the sunshine?
TYLER: Yes. Though I hide, I wear Wolford turtlenecks and gloves and hats every day.
OTTENBERG: Well, okay. A little history, Liv and I go way back with Jack and Lazaro, the new designers of Loewe.
TYLER: We do.
OTTENBERG: We’re all New Yorkers.
TYLER: We grew up together. And then we did that amazing shoot in Harbour Island with Theo Wenner.
OTTENBERG: Yes, with Theo Wenner for Purple magazine, all Proenza Schouler. That was a minute ago, and now they’ve grown up.
TYLER: Running around barefoot in the sand. That was a really fun shoot.
OTTENBERG: It was. We shot at dawn.
TYLER: Oh, yes.
OTTENBERG: And now here we are and wow, they really did it today.
TYLER: It was so beautiful. Very sophisticated. I loved it.
OTTENBERG: Which Loewe girl are you?
TYLER: I always love their fabrics, they’re always so unique. I love the way those skirts move, the purple and white skirts. I’d love to have one of those fisherman caps, those were amazing.
OTTENBERG: Yeah, I was going to say, for your Ojai thing.
TYLER: It’s back home to Maine. What did you like?
OTTENBERG: I really like it all, the panty/bodysuit type stuff, and then the leather shorts—
TYLER: Yeah, the leather shorts with the legs coming through.
OTTENBERG: But then there were also really cool ways to be totally covered. Like the oversized coat with the long pants that were leather.
TYLER: Did you see the fluorescent orange mesh thing with the pants hiding underneath, one of those coats?
OTTENBERG: Yes, Wait, hold on, I’ll pull her up. Oh, that’s my driver, isn’t he cute?
TYLER: He’s so cute.
OTTENBERG: He’s an Interview-ee. He’s so sweet.
TYLER: Wait, so I go way back with Interview, because I was close to Ingrid Sischy. I’ve been on the cover three or four times.
OTTENBERG: I know. Inez [van Lamsweerde] did—
TYLER: Oh my god, me and Joaquin.
OTTENBERG: Yeah, your cover with Joaquin with the—
TYLER: Birds of paradise. That is one of the most beautiful…
OTTENBERG: Your first cover of Interview. But wow, the show was fucking great. I got emotional. I almost had a tear at the finale from the energy in the room.
TYLER: Everybody really, sincerely clapped.
OTTENBERG: Everyone sincerely clapped because it was a good show.
TYLER: And it was so French.
OTTENBERG: There’s so many of our friends that are here at this show, but you don’t get a reaction like that for nothing. It has real energy. I was also thinking, the show is very much American fashion at its best. It’s pragmatic and sharp and modern and maybe a bit futuristic and sporty. It’s something that someone could wear. I don’t mean that in a boring way. I mean this stuff is fantasy, but I could see you wearing it in Ojai. You know what I mean?
TYLER: Definitely. There’s a lot of supermodel girlfriends that come up to Ojai. So sometimes we get all dressed up to go out. Eric Good lived there. Ojai is fun, there’s a hotel and then there’s this old movie theater that’s from the 1920s and they play all the oldies, like Jaws and Star Wars.
OTTENBERG: I need to go.
TYLER: Come stay at my house.
OTTENBERG: I will come stay at your house next time and we’ll hang out at the hotel and wear Loewe and maybe see a movie. It’s so good to see you, I love you.
TYLER: I love you too.
