I wanna be adorned
Paint, ceramics, old newspapers, S&M masks, shrimp made out of yarn, and a retooled jukebox have all served as materials for the New York-based artist Christian Holstad’s sculptures and collages. For this edition of our annual Art Issue, Holstad teamed up with the photographer Nicolas Menu to create a whimsical installation featuring the season’s dreamiest resort accessories, from Dior hats to Valentino shoes. “Venice and Paris were on my mind, particularly the canals,” Holstad says of the work, which reveals a surrealistic reclining figure when all of the photos are lined up together. Holstad is currently working on an installation he will mount at New York’s Swiss Institute in May.
