The Hunger Games

ABOVE: THE HUNGER SUNGLASSES. SPECIAL THANKS: IMPOSSIBLE FILM.

Before launching his own line in 2014, Pratt Institute graduate Adam Selman carved out an exceptional career dressing the likes of Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and Dolly Parton. He is most widely known as Rihanna’s go-to designer and is responsible for many of her most famous ensembles: the pink faux-fur bomber from her 777 Tour, the handcrafted Swarovski crystal gown she wore to the CFDA awards in June, and the pineapple bikini she sported in the Vita Coco ads on billboards around the world. His creations are witty and tough, yet ultimately feminine.

Now, in collaboration with Le Specs—the eyewear company known for its reinvention of classic shapes—Selman has created a collection of retro-style sunglasses that the masses can be excited about. The collection, which made its debut during Selman’s S/S 2015 collection at NYFW—involves a series of cat-eyed frames, available in sophisticated shades ranging from pearly white to raspberry red. On the catwalk, the frames were paired with accessories that complimented their vintage theme including pearl chokers, visors, and cross-body duffels. Selman kept ensembles updated, however, with contemporary hemlines and billowing fabrics. We were drawn to one pair of glasses in particular: “The Hunger” spectacles, which are available in silver and satin black. These cat-eyed frames will always be reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor, but Selman’s take on the spectacles evolves beyond the beehive hairstyle of the 1950s and has a clear place in today’s contemporary scene.
