10 PICKS FROM INDEPENDENT NEW YORK 2016

Founded in 2010 by gallerists Elizabeth Dee and Darren Flook, the art fair Independent New York has distinguished itself among other satellite fairs at Armory week for its focus on the curatorial elements and possibilities within the art fair format. The pair drove this point home, when, in late 2014, they presented Independent Projects, the first art fair featuring installations conceived to outlive the fair itself, and as such, the artwork stayed on view as an exhibition for a week after the fair’s close. Around this time last year, the future of Independent was uncertain, as its former home at 548 West 22nd Street in Chelsea was set to be torn down for condos. But, only a few months later, Dee confirmed the fair would move to TriBeCa’s Spring Studios. Now in its seventh year, Independent is showing 40 international galleries, all of which easily adopted to the new building. Spring Studios lets in plenty of natural light, and each booth has plenty of elbow room–leaving plenty of space for exciting potential.
