Quoted: What’s Fashion When You’ve Got the Drums?

Recently signed to Island/Universal Records, Brooklyn-based band The Drums are set to take off, with a summer tour that’s now all over England. The Drums took the stage this past weekend at London’s legendary record label Rough Trade, and gave an excellent sold-out show. To call the performance rousing would be beside the point: the band is quickly mastering a mix of summery, Indie-influenced pop and New Wave cool, with an adolescent stutter to smart to be unknowing and straight-leg jeans. It all does sound very urban ennui, and indeed the band has received a lot of attention recently from the fashion corners of the world when Hedi Slimane gave a rare interview for Style.com and listed The Drums as his favorite band, before extolling their virues. That’s no news to followers of his photo blog, where the band has appeared crisp, clean and fresh-faced in all of their all-American post-androgynous glory. At the show, we asked Drums frontman Jonathan Pierce about the attention. “It’s good I guess, it opened some doors in the fashion world,” he laughed. But Pierce wasn’t born into this lifestyle: “Although we’ve become quite good friends and we’re in frequent contact, I knew very little of Hedi before.”
