Soundclouds of the Underground: New York Fashion Week, 7th Inning Stretch

ABOVE: GOLDROOM

These days, music truly lives online, with an infinite number of websites dedicated to hosting tunes for the laptop-wielding masses. However, the web’s bottomless pit of blogs isn’t the only place to troll for mp3 treasures—some of the newest and most exciting (Internet-friendly) artists can be sought out via Soundcloud, the online stage that allows musicians to promote and distribute their music to fans and friends across the globe. In this weekly column, expert Internet sleuth Alex Chapman goes into the depths of the music-sharing site, in hopes of shedding light on emerging acts, as well as sharing some digital diamonds in the rough.

If you’re in New York, chances are you’ve become caught up in the hoopla that is New York Fashion Week. You’ve stopped by all the right shows in all the right looks and run yourself ragged bouncing from party to party—you even got a selfie with a celeb! But as the final day of NYFW comes to a close, you might find yourself needing a bit of a pick-me-up (in addition to the Advil you’ve already taken). Alas, listen to the three tracks below to get help powering through the chicest (and most stressful) week in NYC.

Goldroom: “Embrace”

Who: LA-based producer Goldroom makes sunny, shimmering electro-pop that seems perfect for blasting in a convertible or the club. His style is magically melodic, full of fun, disco-esque riffs and rhythms that combine to create tracks like his mesmerizing cover of Elliott Smiths’s “St. Ides Heaven.”

The Song: Written by Goldroom and George Maple and featuring the sultry Ariela Jacobs on vocals, the track is pop at its purest and most powerful—Jacobs’ soft coo surfs sleekly over the epic synths and snare slaps.

Current Project: Goldroom starts his US tour today in Chicago at The Empty Bottle. For more info, head to his Facebook page.

A$AP Ferg (Nire Dark Knight Edit): “Shabba”

Who: A former student of Melbourne’s Red Bull Music Academy, producer Nire’s style is a collage of eerie, sexy sounds that seem to stem from hip-hop but, thanks to the beatmaker’s versatility, don’t necessarily have to stay there.

The Song: “Shabba” has made the rounds this Fashion Week (and this summer), a rowdy party favorite that always brings things to another level. Nire spins the track on its head, pulling it back, cutting it up, and adding wonderfully weird waves of synth.

Current Project: Stay updated on all things Nire via her website.

Ryan Hemsworth: “Against A Wall” (Feat. Lofty305)

Who: This column is no stranger to Mr. Hemsworth (a contributor himself), who had a great NYFW thanks in large part to his role as DJ for the Opening Ceremony show, held at Super Pier 25. Hemsworth had guests like Rihanna and Justin Bieber grooving in their seats, and if you take one listen to his dreamy beats, it’s easy to see why.

The Song: The producer does it again, this time with the help of Metro Zu’s Lofty305. Layered over Hemsworth’s beat, Lofty’s
light, laid back vocals maintain a heart-wrenching melancholia while still seeming fit for the dancefloor.

Current Project:
Ryan’s new LP,
Guilt Trips, will be available October 22nd via Last Gang Records—stay updated by logging into his Facebook
