Soundclouds of the Underground: Mix Master Edition
These days, music truly lives online, with an infinite number of websites dedicated to hosting tunes for the laptop-wielding masses. However, the web’s bottomless pit of blogs isn’t the only place to troll for mp3 treasures—some of the newest and most exciting (Internet-friendly) artists can be sought out via Soundcloud, the online stage that allows musicians to promote and distribute their music to fans and friends across the globe. In this weekly column, expert Internet sleuth Alex Chapman goes into the depths of the music-sharing site, in hopes of shedding light on emerging acts, as well as sharing some digital diamonds in the rough.
The Internet is home to many a DJ mix, with different beatmakers and music aficionados posting thematic playlists across the web. Soundcloud is a particularly good place to dig for different types of mixes, and this week we’ve done just that, pointing out three in particular that carry a special distinction
Juliana Huxtable & Anthony Dicap: “Live Mix #001”
Who: Juliana Huxtable and Anthony Dicap are two of New York’s most sought after DJs. The gorgeous self-described “SAPIO-GLAM-SEXUAL” Juliana Huxtable has become a nightlife staple for her Shock Value party at downtown New York’s Sutra, where she spins an eclectic mix of danceable sounds. Dicap makes waves at a number of spots, most recently Le Bain’s weekly Wednesday party. Dicap’s style is new school with a nostalgic tinge; playing obscure dance remixes of Omarion songs and Lil Jon-sampling Baltimore club bangers.
The Sound: The two’s first joint live mix is raw and unfiltered in the best way possible, spanning a large musical spectrum. Things start off with a dark dancehall-oriented edit of Nicki Minaj’s “Boss Ass Bitch” freestyle, but, by its conclusion, things shift into a high-energy mode with Lil Texas’ remix of “I’m a Stoner” closing things out.
Current Project: Keep up with Juliana and Anthony‘s whereabouts via their Twitter pages.
Teen Witch: “The SinLabel Sessions Vol. 016”
Who: Modern Renaissance man Teen Witch is behind a cluster of projects, but his musical skills have become synonymous with a sound that walks the line between club-ready anthems and bubblegum power-pop. He can often be seen spinning at Chicago’s Total Therapy party, a frequent stop for music’s cool acts from across the globe.
The Sound: Teen Witch’s mix for The SinLabel Sessions, which is described as “a curated mixtape series showcasing our favorite artists,” is a prime example of his unique sound—shimmering trap beats with happy-sounding synths flood the mix’s opening as Teen Witch goes between cool takes on mainstream favorites like Chris Brown and Ellie Goulding, to rare cuts from Endor and Lee Carvallo.

Fei Fei and ETC!ETC!: “Feided 1053”
Who: LA’s Fei Fei is a talented producer/DJ whose influences span from Detroit techno to trance and a classical piano past. Her influences shine best during her “Feided” radio show, where she masterfully mixes a number of unique tracks alongside special guests.
The Sound: For this edition of Feided, Fei Fei teamed up with Mad Decent’s ETC!ETC!, a beloved beatmaker who fuses together trap, moombathon, and big bass sounds. The result? A near two-hour long collection of tracks that consistently hit hard as their effortless shift from genre to genre.
Current Project: Keep up with Fei Fei and ETC!ETC! via their Facebook pages.
