Soundclouds of the Underground: Fashion Week Anthem Edition

ABOVE: DRE GREEN

These days, music truly lives online, with an infinite number of websites dedicated to hosting tunes for the laptop-wielding masses. However, the web’s bottomless pit of blogs isn’t the only place to troll for mp3 treasures—some of the newest and most exciting (Internet-friendly) artists can be sought out via Soundcloud, the online stage that allows musicians to promote and distribute their music to fans and friends across the globe. In this weekly column, expert Internet sleuth Alex Chapman goes into the depths of the music-sharing site, in hopes of shedding light on emerging acts, as well as sharing some digital diamonds in the rough.

Frocks are flying, front row seats are being filled by the famous, and this season’s chicest looks are shuffling through the cold—that’s right, as of today, New York Fashion Week is in full swing. Whether you have a busy schedule or are observing from afar, you’ll need some tunes to up your chic stamina. Below we’ve picked three of our favorite songs from the month, any of which could be a candidate for NYFW anthem.

Uzi: “Scene Girl”

Who: Uzi is a multimedia collective whose recent video work with artists like Kid Cudi, A$AP Mob, and Riff Raff  has pioneered an innovative VHS comeback that combines future and past. Made up of Gabe and Mike, Uzi also produces music that fits this filtered aesthetic. Dazed synths, snares, and snaps give the Uzi sound a future-trap feel, although we wouldn’t be quick to categorize the duo’s ever-expanding style.

The Song:
“Scene Girl” is chic and snarky, a chilled-out ode to sexy girls whose priority is the party (you might just run into a few during your Fashion Week excursions). Featuring Gabe’s telephoned vocals and Atari-style synths, the track rides smooth and seems ripe for runway walking.

Current Project: “Scene Girl” was recently released along with an awesome video—check it out on their site.

Dre Green: “Fear

Who:
Dre Green is a Chicago singer whose voice has a sexy R&B swag you might recognize from past tracks with music blog staple GTW. Relatively new to the scene, Green shows a great amount of promise, her voice maintaining a simultaneous softness and strength.

The Song: Produced by Jeremiah Meece (whose infectious and eerie beats are inescapable at the moment), “Fear” is scary and cinematic. Green’s sexy growl is gripping, especially on top of Meece’s ambient rhythms.

Current Project:  “Fear” is Green’s second single from her forthcoming mixtape debuting Spring 2014 on Lo Motion. Stay updated via her Facebook.

Gallant: “Forfeit”

Who: An artist we’ve been happily observing for a bit, Gallant is a talented vocalist whose style is in the vein of Miguel, but with a sound that veers far more left. Songs like “Sirens  employ the darkness of R&B outcasts like The Weeknd, whereas “If It Hurts” evokes a haunting sentiment.

The Song: Produced by another column favorite Felix Snow, (TDE’s SZA), “Forfeit” is a beautifully calm collision of sensual sounds, with a nice kick via the staccato snare. “Feed me your sorrows,” Gallant sings, his voice soothingly silky.

Current Project: Get to know Gallant via his Facebook page.
