Exclusive Video Premiere: ‘Not Around,’ Montgomery
First emerging on the music scene late last year with her debut EP New Clear War, elusive singer, songwriter, and producer Montgomery has yet to reveal much information about herself. Shortly before the dreamy, synth-infused indie pop EP in December, she released her first music video for “Piñata,” which was co-produced with Tom Scary (better known as Tom Lansek of Big Scary). Now, we are pleased to premiere her second video for the track “Not Around.”
Filmed with Kodak Super 16mm film, the video opens with the Gold Coast-based artist wandering through the Praga District of Warsaw and its surrounding areas. Two other characters, which appear to be a ghost of Montgomery and a former lover, trail closely behind as the video eloquently embellishes the track’s lyrical components (“I set the tone so you’d keep coming home / But you’re not around, you’re not around / I gave it all when you asked me for more / But then you turned it down / And now you’re not around”).
“Inspiration [for the video] came from the track’s natural hinging between the melancholy lyricism and notion of a love gone sour, and the instrumentation that, to me, suggested hope,” Jessica Lawton, Montgomery’s frequent collaborator and the video’s director, says. The viewer watches as visual associations evoke haunted memories of the past, but as the video progresses Montgomery transitions away from feelings of despair and depression to those of hope and moving forward.
