The trailer for what is supposed to be Daniel Day-Lewis’s last film before retirement was unveiled today.
Phantom Thread, set in 1950s post-war London, stars Day-Lewis as intense, womanizing fashion designer Reynolds Woodcock, whose life is derailed when he falls for the headstrong young Alma, played by Vicky Krieps. The character of Reynolds Woodcock is reportedly based on the life of British designer Charles James.
It’s been five years since Day-Lewis starred in his last film, Lincoln, but the 60-year-old Oscar winner announced over the summer that he would no longer be working as an actor. His spokeswoman called it a “private decision” and fans were left longing for explanations. Will this be the closure we’re all looking for?
Phantom Thread will be released in limited theaters on December 25, 2017. See the dramatic trailer below.
