STANDOFF
On the Front Lines at the ICE Protests in Los Angeles
This past Friday, a series of immigration raids swept through the Los Angeles area. It was the first wave of a goal the current administration calls the “biggest deportation operation the country has ever seen,” in which federal agents stormed workplaces and made arrests. Then, the people pushed back. After protests broke out in downtown L.A., President Trump, against the wishes of local authorities, deployed thousands of National Guard and active-duty Marines armed with gas canisters and flash bangs, to repress his own citizens on the ground. As the standoffs (and ICE arrests) continue, photographer Jamie Lee Taete took us to the front lines to capture the demonstrators inspiring action across the country.
