Paris Men’s Fall 2010: Day 1 and Already It’s Grey Gardens

2 LOOKS FROM ALEXIS MABILLE

I’d heard grey was the cool color for fall, but I wasn’t prepared for Alexis Mabille, Paris’s ebullient bowtie boy, who kicked off the collections here with an entire collection like a January thunderstorm.  Mabille showed nearly everything in grey with shorts—baggy, rolled-cuff Bermudas in cashmere blanket wool over long beige underwear with socks and sleek lace-ups. The square caban jackets with oversized snaps and newsboy caps had a Buster Brown look which  made the guys look they were about seven or eight  and dressed by a 19th Century maman.  Mabille is always trying new things: knit pants with a soft drape and knit blazers, shirts styled like trench coats, popcorn sweaters, astrakhan blousons and silver fox vests, sexy T-shirts in wisteria patterned burned out silk-velvet and belts in antique filigree metal like bracelets bring out a man’s  boy toy side. And he showed off his new collection of briefs with transparent panels at the waist which represent a big challenge to anyone who has ever even dreamed of asking for seconds.
