2025 was an undeniably strange year for beauty. From salmon sperm facials and MAGA face to deep-plane facelifts, looksmaxxing, and the slow burnout of clean-girl trends, we’ve just about seen it all. To mark the year’s end, we went back through conversations with Interview friends including Paloma Elsesser, Chloë Sevigny and more to find their favorite (or least favorite) beauty trends and products of the year.

PALOMA ELSESSER

Product: Shower Oil
“I love an oil-to-cleanser formula. I love L’Occitane almond oil one. I’ve used that very consistently for a very long time. I also like bar soap, because most times I’m home I use washcloths every day. I collect soaps from all over the world.”
Trend: Morning Shed
“You ever see on TikTok where the girls sleep with the rollers, the bonnet, the eye mask, the mouth tape? It’s just too much, girl. And then they film in the morning shedding all of it. You don’t need all of those products on your face. And beef tallow. It sounds fucking nasty to me. It’s also not supported scientifically.”

TOKYO STYLEZ

Product: Lip Combo
“I am a Cork or Chestnut liner from MAC and a clear gloss girl.”
Trend: Soft Glam
“Lately, I’ve been into soft glam. I just think that’s the new makeup trend, period. I feel like everybody’s moving toward that softer, more natural, easy, effortless type of look. I noticed—looking back at photos—when you have a lot of makeup on, it kind of ages you. You look older and more mature, and you can’t really see your true beauty under all that extra powder and glaze.”

CHLOË SEVIGNY

Product: Moisturizer
“I’m a big moisturizer person and I go through so much. I go between an expensive Caudalie one, or one of my favorites is also the Palmer’s Cocoa Butters. I’m obsessed because the Caudalie is so expensive and the Palmer’s is so cheap. But it smells so good, especially in the winter. It’s so, like, cocoa-y. It’s just unfortunate that the bottle is not that attractive.”
Trend: Unpolished
“I’m really going to try and bring grunge back. Through beauty and fashion, this kind of plasticized, polished, over-retouched perfect thing has gone way too far. We have to let some air into the world again, some life. It’s become too unreachable. I don’t want to just keep using the word plastic or too polished, but it’s just like, where’s the texture? Where’s the earthiness? Everybody looks like little dolls out there.”

ANNA MALYGON

Product: Dior Concealer
“In general, Dior products are the best. The mascara applies the best, it’s super natural. It’s the best foundation too because it’s just so light and it washes off easily. And the best concealer is Dior. I tried every single concealer with my pimple history.”
Trend: Lip Filler
“I wish I could do lip filler. It’s my dream, but I can’t because I’ve done it so many times and it just dissolves so quickly. My body just doesn’t take to it. In person you can see it really easily, but on social media it blends in. It actually looks really good on social media.”

DEREK CHADWICK

Product: Lip Plumper
“I always personally felt really confident when my lips were bigger at events, and doing red carpets. But I hated how dry and sticky they left my lips. My lips would dry out so bad, and I’d always have to take another moisturizing lip product with me. So that’s how I came up with the first product, the Chaddy Matte Lip Plumper.”
Trend: Looksmaxxing
“I’m all about looksmaxxing. I feel like you got to experiment. Recently, I was trying out a mustache. I can grow a beard, but I prefer to be clean-shaven, because I feel like it accentuates my jaw better. And my hair was long recently, and I loved it. I didn’t realize that my hair texture was really curly. But then one day I woke up and was like, “I need a break.” So I buzz cut it, and regretted it instantly. It’s crazy how a haircut can completely change the way that you look.”

MEL OTTENBERG

Trend: Mutton chops
“I’m into mutton chops.”
