“I Immediately Shit My Pants”: Eddie Huang’s Book Tour Confessions

Eddie Huang's book.

Eddie Huang is famous for being a polymath—running restaurants, writing and directing movies, and hosting a podcast with his wife Natashia. And yet somehow, he found the time to write his debut novel, Come Undone, in about five days. The book follows Hubie, a man who approaches love the way he approaches a menu—always sampling, never committing—until he meets Anastasia, whose own hidden history makes her impossible to ignore. To promote its release, Huang hit the road for a good old-fashioned book tour that took him from The Strand to Vegas to Santa Barbara to San Francisco, running into astrologers, Pauly Shore, and some digestive issues at the Sunset Tower along the way.

Eddie Haung with wife, Natashia, at The Strand.

The tour starts at The Strand with my wife, Natashia, who is the SOURCE of everything. That’s not even just my opinion. My astrologer has confirmed via the stars that she is in fact the source of everything that is good about me.

My best homies Sean Thor Conroe and Harold Rogers with me at the Boom Boom Room.

I’m really gonna miss her on tour.

Ray Alba at a restaurant.

Ray Alba is one of three real friends I made in LA, and in every major life moment he ends up picking me up from the airport. From a post-reading panic attack in Alameda years ago to picking me up after returning from Taiwan post-COVID to taking me to the airport post-fires, Ray is somehow always with me for seminal life moments and I love him.

Sunset Tower food.

He takes me to the Sunset Tower. I had the veggie curry to be flaco and I immediately shit my pants.

Eddie Huang's son.

I can’t believe I missed the Knicks Championship Parade for a stupid book tour, but this photo of Senna made it okay.

In LA, my conversation partner is my friend Ottessa Moshfegh.

When I see her copy of Come Undone with all the sticky notes, I am floored. While she is my friend, she is also the most powerful writer of our generation and it means a lot.

After that, I’m on to Vegas.

———

Jing Gao at Lotus of Siam

In Vegas, I link with my aforementioned astrologer Jing Gao at Lotus of Siam. She once again confirms that Natashia is the source of every thing. I met Jing on Huang’s World Shanghai 14 years ago, lost touch, then got back in touch after she started doing astrological readings. She’s the best. She also happens to be the founder of FlyByJing.

Eddie Huang with Pauly Shore.

A wild kismet thing happens. One of my favorite scenes of the novel involves Pauly Shore starting an argument in a Mid-City Men’s Spa named City Spa that ends with him swinging his dick around a dry sauna. When I get off the plane in Burbank, he is the first person I see. I show him the passage and he says, “That’s cool, bro. You should let me play that guy.”

Eddie Huang with Dave Schilling and Christine.

In Santa Barbara, I have a talk with Dave Schilling and Christine came to the talk with her Chihuahua. Christine tells me she is married to Mac Miller’s dad since she read in Fresh Off the Boat that I went to U Pitt.

Ray also pulls up to Santa Barbara and then takes us to Lucky’s for steak after.

A mountain peak.

On my day off in Santa Barbara, I hike to the peak.

———

Eddie Huang holding ice cream.

I go back to the same ice cream shop I went to with Natashia when we first got sprung and ordered the same pistachio and rocky road cup I got years ago.

———

The next stop is Portland. Also on this day, Ryan Sutton decides to review Baohaus and reveals that he reviewed it during Game 1 of the NBA Finals, which I feel is completely insane.

———

Signed copy of Strangers by Belle Burden.

One of my favorite moments of the book tour is when a customer brings up a copy of Come Undone that happens to have the entire manuscript of Strangers by Belle Burden in it instead.

Eddie Huang signing a shoe.

I sign a kid’s shoe.

———

San Francisco auditorium.

The next stop is SF. This photo is crooked because like every other building in SF, this auditorium is on a hill. W. Kamau Bell is my conversation partner this evening and he’s fantastic. He was so fantastic I didn’t get a photo with him.

———

Tomato burrata.

But I did get this photograph of a wonderful heirloom tomato burrata and bacon dish I had at Zuni alongside my orange gatorade zero.

I really miss my wife so thank god she sent me this.
