This is SOUND ADVICE, a weekly destination for playlists curated by Interview’s friends, enemies and lovers. Last week, our editor-in-chief Mel Ottenberg shared his favorite songs for a blue Valentine’s Day. This week, we lift your spirits with the playlist heard on the set of our March 2023 cover shoot with Lana Del Rey, crafted with love by the shoot’s lighting technician David López Osuna.

Where do you dance? In the kitchen while I’m making breakfast for my wife and very hungry dachshund.

What’s on your bedroom playlist? “Where or When” by Peggy Lee.

Favorite genre? I’m a sucker for love songs.

Fuck, marry, kill: Spotify, Soundcloud, Apple Music. Burn it all down and resurrect Art Laboe.

What was your first concert? I saw a tribute band perform The Door’s “Light My Fire” at the Orange County Fair when I was twelve.

What song on this playlist, if any, makes you cry? “Sleepwalk” by Santo & Johnny is a heartbreaker. If you have ever watched La Bamba you would understand.

Name your favorite artist no one knows about. REBE. She sounds like Björk, CocoRosie and Portishead all had a Spanish baby in the early 2000’s.

Do you play an instrument? I’m a trumpet player. Most of my childhood summer’s were spent at my uncle’s house in Mexico learning Mariachi ballads.

What’s your favorite club? The dog food rewards club at Rosie Bunny Bean in Highland Park. What a deal!

What song do you have on repeat? “Ladyfingers” by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

What do you listen to when you’re high? “Mambo del Politécnico” by Pérez Prado and his Orchestra.

What’s your favorite album cover of all time? David Bowie’s “Young Americans”

Who’s the queen of pop? Lesley Gore.

What’s your favorite movie needle-drop? “Then He Kissed Me” as the camera moves through the Copacabana in Goodfellas.
