Kelsey Asbille is having a breakout year. The 26-year-old actress has emerged on the other side of the Disney machine as a mature actress ready to rebuff the polished image she crafted on shows like One Tree Hill and Teen Wolf. This comes across with incredible clarity in director Taylor Sheridan’s harrowing new Western murder mystery Wind River, where Asbille stars alongside Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner, in a role that requires a tact and responsibility not often found among even the most seasoned actors.
She plays Natalie, a Native American teen found dead and shoeless in the opening scenes of the movie. Based on true stories of violence committed against native women, Asbille—who is part Cherokee—considers the film a “call to action for all of us.”
Between takes, Asbille is learning Cherokee and Chinese through online language courses (she is also half Chinese). While working in Utah this year, she made a birthday trip to Moab to visit Arches National Park and is hoping to perfect the craft of riding horseback. Here, we’ve collected 10 things that bring even more joy to Asbille’s life.
