Casey Spooner on NFTs, Threesomes, and Warehouse Raves
Casey Spooner has come a long way since his debut as half of New York’s trailblazing electronic duo Fischerspooner more than 20 years ago. With today’s announcement of SPOONERHOLLYWOOD, a multimedia project spanning the realms of music, film, performance and political commentary, Spooner has managed to breathe new life into his storied career once again. The production involves the release of a music video for the Julian Stetter-produced dance floor anthem “Blood is Blood” directed by Ned Stresen-Reuter, available for purchase as an NFT. Other featured items include a SPOONERHOLLYWOOD logo designed by Gareth Hague and photographs by Jun Lu, all available for pre-order here.
Spooner’s new mixed-media chapter is rooted in that same middle-finger-up energy that cemented his place in the LGBTQIA+ liberation movement, pitting his queerness against his southern American roots to cultivate his signature sound. “The [“Blood is Blood”] video is a joyous celebration of the transformative power of glamour,” Spooner tells us. On the occasion of the music video’s release and the launch of SPOONERHOLLYWOOD, the boundary-breaking artist took a moment to share his thoughts on a few topics selected at semi-random, from hot girl summer to cryptocurrencies.

Cryptocurrency
“All economies and currencies are invented. It is a collective belief that gives them value. We have the opportunity to build new economies tied to new technologies. I’m optimistic it could empower the creative class and have an important impact on culture and politics at large.”

Fireworks
“Love fireworks. Fireworks are amazing. They’re such an ancient, crazy kind of idea of celebration and sculpture. The idea of the history of fireworks, using fire and pyrotechnics to paint and express ideas is beautiful. I had the most amazing fireworks experience when I was in Rio for New Years’. I was swimming naked in the ocean in Copacabana underneath the fireworks. It was like literally being immersed in water in the reflection of fireworks swimming with like an Amazonian trans woman. My new year’s kiss was from an Amazonian trans woman this year, so that was a good year.”

OnlyFans
“I mean, you know what? If you can make the coin, get the coin, girls. Get the coin where you can get it. No shame. I might do it. I might do it too, just for fun.”

Threesomes
“Absolutely! More more more! I love a good spit roast.”
———
Drag Race
“My friend Kate Hardy gets so mad at me, but I just don’t watch Drag Race. I watched it like one season like three or four years ago. I love drag. I love Ru. I do remember Shea Couleé. I just wish these girls would learn how to write better songs. I’m friends with Violet Chachki. I’m friends with Violet, so I get enough of drag from her.”

Warehouse Dances
“I’ve had a very difficult year like everyone else. But I was pushed to a breaking point several times. I wasn’t sure if I would survive…mentally and financially. I am so happy and thankful just to see my friends and hug and kiss and dance. I danced this past weekend for the first time at an underground warehouse party. Just to be able to move and hear music on the sound system surrounded by sweaty people… It’s primal… I need it. I feel so much better surrounded by my brothers and sisters! I’m so into hugging. I love to hug.”

Pride Protests
“I mean, protests in general I think are amazing. I was never into protesting when I was younger for some reason. I don’t know why. Then the day after Trump got elected in the United States, I was devastated. I couldn’t sleep. I was crying. And I felt complete panic and despair, and I tried to just keep going. The Black Lives Matter protest started. When it started, it was very dark and strange and weird because they started enacting curfews and called in the National Guard, and it definitely felt like impending violence—that was strange. But very quickly the ACLU sued the city of Los Angeles. We’re not going to sit around and wait for someone else to fix this problem. These people seem to have forgotten that we put them in a position of power, and we can take that power away.”

NFTs
Most are ugly. I can’t even look at them. Weird bad digital shit… But I love the word fungible! Who knew we would ever say the word fungible!?

Hot Girl Summer
“This summer is going to be more than hot. It’s going to be the hottest! But I felt something different on the dance floor Friday night. There was so much love in the room. I think we’re going to feel more than just hot.”

Elon Musk
“I love his ambition but he should give all of his money away. That would be the coolest—universal healthcare, a living wage for all, reparations. We don’t need to go to outer space right now. We need to take care of each other right now.”

The American South
“I come from the South, so I’m always trying to like negotiate with my conservative background and still accept and honor the things that I love from my past. When I was younger, I used to attack my family. I’m just myself, and I don’t hold back. In the past, I would edit what I would say, what I would wear, or who I would bring home. Now, I still dress like a fucking high fashion bitch. One time I went to visit my grandmother in South Georgia, and I showed up, I looked so good. I splurged, and I had a whole Tom Ford, YSL, Steve McQueen looking LeMond racing outfit, like a red suede jacket, white jeans, loafers. I was going to surprise my grandmother, and I jumped out of the car, and I was walking around the house, and the neighbors called the police on me. I looked so fierce in Tom Ford in South Georgia, they were going to tase me.”
