The age of social media can be daunting; images of picture perfect lives masquerade as reality and continuously flood our feeds. In Klangstof's alluring track "We Are Your Receiver," off of their recent debut album Close Eyes to Exit (Mind of A Genius/Warner Bros.), the Amsterdam-based four-piece explores the troubles of the digital age. The new remix of the song by Chicago-based electronic artist Autograf, which premieres exclusively below, heightens this sense of urgency and anxiety through elaborate electronic melodies.
"The original version was about the fear of social media, and how we all pretend to be perfect on the internet," explains Koen van de Wardt, the lead singer of Klangstof. "To me it is very scary. If you are honest and your real self, you will usually get ignored." Autograf transforms the reflective original song, which the band sees as "a ballad with soundscapes," into a powerful dance number that weaves in and out of synthetic sound, hypnotizing the listener and seemingly bringing them directly into the digital world. "I always have a really hard time to press the play button when a remix comes in," says van de Wardt of his general hesitation toward remixes. "The original is such a personal experience, that it is always difficult to let other people in and mix that up. But as soon as a remix has a very original and cool vibe to it, it will open up to new fans and just elevate the whole experience."
Though "We Are Your Receiver" is enveloped in the world of social media, and much of Close Eyes to Exit deals with themes like isolation, soon Klangstof will be anything but removed from the world: We're pleased to announce that in May the band will open for the Flaming Lips during a series of West Coast shows, and come June Klangstof will join Miike Snow on a U.S. tour. They're also slated to perform at Coachella, where they will be the first Dutch band to be included in the festival's lineup.
