Exclusive Track Premiere: ‘raW drivE,’ Jr. Hi

Elusive producer Jr. Hi first caught our attention last year with the release of his debut EP Virtual Lover, featuring collaborations with The Weeknd, Childish Gambino, and Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins. But for the entire duration of 2015 he remained silent and entirely off the radar—until now, that is. Here we’re pleased to mark his return with the premiere of “raW drivE,” the titular track from his forthcoming sophomore release.

“‘raW drivE’ is about a crazy sexual relationship with a girl who’s too fine, like a brand new sports car. She’s fast, she’s dangerous, she’ll drive you out of your mind,” the producer (whose real name and appearance are unknown) tells us. “It’s a musical cartoon for lovers. I wanted to reflect the raw flavor of the lustful lyrics in the cut-up approach to the vocal samples and dirty first-take lead vox, too.”

The song, which has a steadily thumping bass and spliced vocals, was written with the rest of the EP’s songs in a makeshift mysterious studio “in the corner of a kitchen in a mountainside house on a small island in the south of the Mediterranean sea.” Of “raW drivE,” he says, “The lyrics and ideas often come in dreams…I wanted to create new jams with a stripped down and dark production, so I decided to make it myself in seclusion. I hope this approach gives it that direct, personal sound that I love in some of my favorite records by other artists.”
