Best Actor: Gary Oldman
Among the Best Actor hopefuls is Gary Olman, nominated for his role in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Oldman’s been a critics’ favorite for quite some time, but this is his first nomination. When we met a somewhat younger Gary Oldman to talk about his film State of Grace for our October 1990 issue, he told us a little about his acting method:
“When I said I’d do it, I was bullshitting my way through the whole fucking thing. I mean, I didn’t know I could do this character. He just sort of came. He just sort of appeared—very late on, actually. Right before shooting…you always hope that the cloak of inspiration will fall, and you’ll be O.K.”
