SATURDAY SEP. 10, 2023 10:20 PM NEW YORK.

Late on Saturday night, VIPs including Avril Lavigne, Ice Spice, and Rachel Sennott adorned the front row as Dion Lee closed out the day’s events with a salaciously camp Spring-Summer 2024 show. As is always the case for the Australian designer, who talked to us last season about his Y2K-inspired F/W 2023 show, there were sexy cut outs and “butt-out business looks,” as our senior editor Taylore Scarabelli described them. But these models were ready to get to work on a construction site, with wrenches sewed into their tops, extension cords snaking from their low-rise pants, and leather toolkits fastened to their waists. As the designer revealed to us after the show, it’s no wonder his father was a welder. After catching up with the designer, we headed on over to The Standard Hotel, where Ice Spice mounted the iconic Boom Boom Room gold bar and treated the crowd to performances of “Deli” and “Princess Diana.”—JAKE NEVINS

TAYLORE SCARABELLI: That was so cute. I feel like you went camp.

DION LEE: Not deliberately. [Laughs]

SCARABELLI: You start with a few butt-out business looks.

LEE: [Laughs]

SCARABELLI: This was fresh for you!

LEE: It was more playful, for sure.

SCARABELLI: It was really fun. I loved the construction-worker inspired looks. It was very Bob the Builder but horny.

FASHION: Hi, congratulations!

SCARABELLI: We need fashion’s review!

FASHION: I loved it. It was an evolution.

LEE: It was very brand-focused. We were building on things we’ve done in the past.

SCARABELLI: Where did the toolbox narrative come from?

LEE: Well, my dad’s a welder.

SCARABELLI: Oh. So we’re getting a little Freudian.

LEE: Always.

SCARABELLI: My favorite look was the extension cord plugged into the pants.

LEE: Yeah. I’m just having fun with it and trying not to take things too seriously.

SCARABELLI: Well, I had a great time.
