The Mondrian Goes Downtown

In Miami, the Mondrian is a whitewashed hub of surfer cool. The boutique hotel’s Los Angeles branch is more classic Hollywood with a hint of futuristic edge. Now, the Morgans Hotel Group has come to New York with Mondrian SoHo, the brand’s first Gotham locale, on Crosby Street, south of Houston. Interior designer Benjamin Noriega Ortiz draws reference from Jean Cocteau’s fairy tale La Belle et la Bête (1946) to give a touch of darker fantasy to the hotel’s interior, in the form of large-scale mirrors and rose-vine-patterned floors. Chef Sam Talbot helms the kitchen at Imperial No. 9, the in-house restaurant. The 253-room hotel will open later this month. More info at morganshotelgroup.com
