Red-headed former Ramona Quimby Joey King would be a natural fit for Fiona, the compassionate girl Jonas finds he's having more than friendly feelings for. (That desire is quickly stamped out when Jonas is given pills designed to curb his 'stirrings;' every adult member of the community takes them.)
Jonas's mother is a judge who's authoritative without being severe. A buttoned-up Selma Blair would be a good fit. (Side note to Hollywood: Give this woman more work, please!)
Asher, Jonas's best friend, is a gregarious goofball whose mouth tends to get him in trouble. 12-year-old Nolan Gould of 'Modern Family' would be perfect for the role.
The part of Jonas, the story's complex protagonist is tricky—thoughtful Super 8 star Joel Courtney would be perfect if he were a few years younger. As it is, we'll fudge this one a bit and propose that Bridges and co. find an unknown kid to anchor their film.
Jonas's father is a "nurturer" who cares for the community’s babies. He’s cheerful and playful—even when committing acts that shock and appall Jonas. We think Neil Patrick Harris would be perfect as a father figure with a hidden dark side.
Elle Fanning has the right intensity to play Rosemary, the 12-year-old girl who was chosen to inherit the Giver's mantle ten years before Jonas; her appointment ended in tragedy.
