Less Than Zero
BARBARA LING: "[This restaurant] was in Venice, [California], and I don’t know if it’s still there anymore and if it is, it’s probably revamped. It was a Venice café. I know that the original is gone, I mean the sign and everything. We built it up more than it was but it was a cool shaped café that was in Venice."
BARBARA LING: "The parties were very big, video was huge and the idea of multiscreen was just starting to explode; so even when you went to an underground club, you would see these guys have 10 TVs hanging off the wall and that was very much the era of MTV."
BARBARA LING: "We had to have [the icebergs] carved and then we had to have them molded so that you could put lights inside of them. I had seen a tiny version of lit up furniture, where people were sitting on cubes, so I thought it would be cool to extend that a little bit further, especially for a party like that. And we went after this theme because there was one big L.A. mansion family that every year brought in snow machines [for their parties]. I don’t mean little, I mean big snow machines, and would snow their whole house for three days."
BARBARA LING: "I would say the clubs were [the hardest sets to create], and actually a number of them had been cut so you didn’t see all the clubs. Creating the clubs was a big deal. Even with the Park Plaza, because it was really such an amazing space and then you had to go back and create a club out of it—those were large sets. It had 35-foot high ceilings so when you’re dropping a piece of fabric you need like 30 of them."
BARBARA LING: "My favorite thing in that house was their Christmas and the mom sitting on this modernist couch. There’s this white skinny Christmas tree with glass and there’s a champagne bottle and nothing there felt like Christmas but that’s Christmas night for them."
BARBARA LING: "You wanted to get away from warmth and into something a lot more brutal, and the great thing with going modernist was the use of glass, glass walls. Especially glass walls in Los Angeles, which was like an oxymoron being if there was an earthquake. It felt very right for the emotional sensibility of this."
