Casting Call: Girls Like Us

Neil Young, another '60s musical icon, is known as one of rock 'n' roll's greatest songwriters and performers. British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, whose wife directed Fifty Shades of Grey, has played a musical star before. In the 2009 biopic, Nowhere Boy—also directed by his wife Sam Taylor-Johnson—he played Beatles' member John Lennon and had to learn to play guitar in the process.

Not only does she have high cheekbones, but Rooney Mara is also a talented actress, as demonstrated by The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Side Effects, and Her, and although she is uncredited, she sings on the soundtrack to her film Ain't Them Bodies Saints. By toning down her edgy vibe to match Joni Mitchell's folksiness, Mara has the capabilities to deliver a great performance. We'd be excited to hear her perform Mitchell's folk-rock classics. Hopefully, Mara won't get squelched.

Carly Simon is the third legendary crooner Girls Like Us focuses on. Back in the day, she attended a Joni Mitchell concert where she reportedly was assaulted by the Pretenders' vocalist, Chrissie Hynde. Her ties to Mitchell are never ending, but Simon certainly has made a name for herself with three Grammys and a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She also performed alongside Taylor Swift on her Red Tour. Evan Rachel Wood models, acts, and sings. We'd like to here her cover Simon's song "Nobody Does It Better."

He may seem a little young, but Nat Wolff (right) reminds us a bit of the renowned Bob Dylan.  Dylan worked with Mitchell and toured with her numerous times. Wolff started his career in The Naked Brothers Band, but is now gaining more recognition with roles in Palo Alto, The Fault in Our Stars, and Paper Towns. Being skilled with various instruments, such as the guitar and piano, Wolff would be a great choice as Dylan.

Most people recognize Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen in the HBO series Game of Thrones. But Clarke also starred in Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's on Broadway in 2013. Carole King had many hits over the course of her career, including "You've Got a Friend" and "It's Too Late," and collaborated with Mitchell on her second album Tapestry. King also penned hits for others musicians, such as "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" for Aretha Franklin. We'd love to see Clarke in a new role that breaks away from her Game of Thrones persona.

Former husband of Carly Simon, James Taylor also worked with both Mitchell and King. Taylor has accumulated five Grammy awards, including one for his cover of King's "You've Got a Friend." He and King still remain close and last performed together at their 2010 reunion tour.

Arthur Darvill
has starred in multiple British TV series, such as Doctor Who and Broadchurch. He played guitar and keyboard in a band called Edmund during his teenage years. More recently, Darvill played the leading role of Guy in the musical Once. It'd be great to see Darvill in a breakout role like this.
