Casting Call: Janis Joplin

Sam Andrew was a guitarist with Joplin in Big Brother and the Holding Company. When she left the band, he came with her. Jason Schwartzman—Wes Anderson muse, Coppola family member, and indie film poster child—would do a fantastic job as Andrew. Firstly, Schwartzman and Andrew share a sensitive and kind stare. Secondly, Schwartzman has a musical background: he was the drummer of Phantom Planet for a while and also has his own solo project, Coconut Records, where he softly and sweetly croons about the West Coast.

Albert Grossman was a well-known manager for American folk music and rock-'n'-roll stars including Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary, and, of course, Joplin. According to Ellis Amburn, in his biography entitled Pearl: The Obsessions and Passions of Janis Joplin, Gurley took out a hefty life insurance policy when he learned that Joplin was using heroin heavily. We could see Jack Black (with some aging prosthetics) as Grossman.

The country musician Kris Kristofferson was one of Jopin's many former lovers. He wrote and recorded the song, "Me and Bobby McGee," which was released on Joplin's posthumous album Pearl and became a number one single in 1971. It also catapulted Kristofferson's career. Garett Hedland effortlessly channels Kristofferson's bluesy and country musical aesthetic. We've seen him play music in films like Country Strong, On the Road, and Inside Llewyn Davis. It would be a pleasure to see him on screen again with a guitar in hand and a longer, dirtier beard.

James Gurley was the guitarist of the psychedelic acid rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company when he met Joplin. The two had a fleeting tryst that ended when Gurley's wife barged into Joplin's home and confronted the couple. Jared Leto not only has experience with the Dallas Buyers Club team, but also has a significant musical career; he and his brother form the rock band Thirty Second to Mars. Leto would do a fantastic job exploring Gurley's psychedelic world, not to mention that the Internet would be thrilled to see his famously long hair accentuated with feathers.

Amy Adams demonstrated her singing ability in the Disney movie Enchanted, where she played a storybook princess who finds herself thrown into present day New York City. Like all Disney princess movies, Adams sings upbeat and catchy fairytale songs with a Prince Charming (James Marsden) at her side. With the character of Janis Joplin, Adams will play a much more serious and dramatic musical role. We're looking forward to hearing her belt Joplin ballads, as well as battle an excessive love for Southern Comfort and tumultuous personal relationships.

Peggy Caserta wrote a memoir about her friend and occasional lover Janis Joplin titled Going Down with Janis. We envision Mia Wasikowksa as this hippie beauty—she exudes a calm demeanor that screams '70s rock-'n'-roll.
