Casting Call: Scooby-Doo

Fred Jones, played by Prinze in the 2002 version, is the fearless leader of Mystery, Inc.: an intrepid detective with all-American good looks. So, Zac Efron, duh.

Daphne Blake is the glamorous, daffy member of the squad - and the one who always seems to find herself getting kidnapped. There's a pretty fragility to Taylor Swift; plus, we already know she can rock a headband and a purple dress.

Velma Dinkley is the token "smart one," played by Cardellini in 2002. We think it's high time she got a little makeover - you know, to prove to the youth that intelligent girls can be pretty, too. Emma Stone is up to the task.

Shaggy, as you know, is a weirdo: he's always scared, and he's too attached to his giant dog. Our dearest hope is that this new installment presents a winking, slightly uncanny, self-referential version of the Scooby bunch; if it does, there is no better choice for Shaggy than James Franco. Look, he already owns a green t-shirt.

Sugar Ray and Pamela Anderson make cameos in the 2002 version, and two versions of the theme song were recorded by Shaggy (of "It Wasn't Me" fame) and MXPX - all of which feels deliciously dated now. We're hoping this iteration also features an of-the-moment spot by someone we'll all chuckle to remember in 2026: maybe, like, PSY

Finally, Scooby-Doo himself has been voiced by several actors, most notably Don Messick, who lent his voice to the character for 25 years. We're irresistibly attracted to casting Dave Coulier, who voiced him for Robot Chicken in 2006.
