Casting Call: Braveheart

Hamish Campbell is the requisite right-hand man to Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Up and coming Scottish actor Alec Newman has the kind, submitting features of a devoted follower with the build to wield a sword.

The Princess Isabelle, Longshank's French daughter-in-law, is sent to placate William Wallace and his rebellion. Diplomacy takes an indecent turn when Isabelle is seduced by Wallace. We agreed with the casting of Camilla Belle in 10,000 B.C. Why waste that timeless beauty in the aughts?

To evade a rule that a lord may take a Scottish bride into his bed on her wedding night,  Murron MaClannough, Wallace's betrothed, literally takes a bite out of her assailant's face. We need a girl with convincing jaw strength and a record of  dramatic fortitude. Accostomed to transcending space and time as the Doctor's bright companion in British cult favorite Doctor Who, we think Scottish-born Karen Gillan could channel 13th-century Scotland.

King Edward I of England, nicknamed "Longshanks" in the film, has a lethal expansionist impulse, proclivity towards hanging defeated troops en masse, and endorsing quid pro quo among noblemen and their servants. We can think of one character (albeit fictional) more insidious, and Ralph Fiennes has already played him. The slight age discrepancy and serious commitment to facial hair maintenance could earn some awards-show buzz.

Robert the Bruce is heir to the Scottish thrown and is torn between fighting for freedom and submitting to the English to secure the throne. In the film version, he betrays Wallace and nine years later leads Scottish troops into battle to atone for the past and earn Scotland its freedom. We trust always Russell Crowe with excessive violence and mild schizophrenia.

For William Wallace, we need an actor who can mimic Gibson's iconic delivery: "They may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom." P.S. I Love You instilled in us a strong impulse to keep Scotsman Gerard Butler alive. Pre-existing character empathy aside, Butler has the charisma to successfully seduce three women and lead 5000 Scottish groups into certain death.
