Casting Call: Gods and Kings

As Bithiah, mother of Ramses' II and the kind soul who took pity on baby Moses and raised him as her own, we nominate Egyptian beauty, actress Yosra El Lozy. She's actually younger than both Riz Ahmed and Michael Aloni, but that's what makeup artists are for!

We hope that Hollywood has learned from the mistakes of Prince of Persia and Alexander and decides to cast a lesser-known actor to play Moses, a lofty role if ever there was. Might we suggest Israeli heartthrob Michael Aloni?

We cast him in our last Bible-based film, but Riz Ahmed, featured in our February issue, deserves more than one film part. Or at least that is how we are justifying casting him as Ramses II, Moses' adoptive brother and arch-nemesis.

We think that Omar Sharif, perhaps better known as Dr. Zhivago, should play Bithia's father, the severe Pharoah who ordered that all Hebrew male babies be killed, which, in the grand tradition of ancient irony, led to Moses being adopted by his daughter. Evidently the man had not seen any one of Aeschylus' Oedipus trilogy. Maybe it's because he's stroking his beard, but Sharif does look pretty evil in this picture...

Aaron is Moses' older brother. According to Exodus, it was Aaron who inaugurated the ten plagues of Egypt (at the request of Moses) and turned all the waters of Egypt into blood, killing quite a few fish and other sea-based creatures. PETA would not be proud. Another Israeli actor, Oshri Cohen, might be a nice choice for Aaron.

Miriam, Moses' older sister, helped save baby Moses' life when she hid him from the Pharoah's army and urged the princess Bithiah to adopt the baby. Although she cannot initially reveal her identity as Moses' sister, she remains in Moses' life throughout the Old Testament and is often referred to as "the prophet." We pick Natalie Portman to play our prophetess.
