Although it was established in the mid-’60s by hikers in California, outerwear brand The North Face has long been associated with preppy, private school teens. Tomorrow, however, all of this will change; Barneys New York and The North Face are launching a new xo Exclusively Ours collaboration consisting of three jacket styles for women and four for men. “We were drawn to The North Face for its universal appeal and brand authenticity,” explains Barneys Senior Fashion Director Tomoko Ogura. “Their reputation for designing a functional technical product was something we embraced and looked to merge with our fashion point of view,” she continues.
Barneys was extremely involved throughout the design process. “We met twice to go over initial details. Then we saw four sets of samples, which addressed various feedback, before confirming the styles that ultimately landed in the stores,” Ogura recalls. “The shibori print came about as we saw the strong reemergence of indigo and responded to idea of an organic print being realized in a technical fabric, a more unexpected combination.”
