Sounding Off

Beginning on August 10, MoMA will showcase its first major exhibition of sound art, Soundings: A Contemporary Score. Featuring 16 contemporary artists working with sound (including Haroon Mirza and Tristan Perich), the show presents a series of artistic responses as disparate as architecture, performance, computer programming, and the visual arts. By positioning the museum’s galleries as a shared social space, Soundings aims to envelop the viewer in a heightened listening experience. “Today, anybody can listen to anything, anywhere, with headphones,” says associate curator Barbara London. “But to have a more social phonic experience is what one can have at a museum.”
