The Second Annual Hip-Hop Karaoke Championship

Antwan Duncan

A Friday night's Fifth Annual Hip-Hop Karaoke Championship, judge Big Daddy Kane tried to convince the crowd that he'd given up his hard-partying ways: "I drink red wine now... I'm 41 years old; I can't be messin' with no Cognac." Such is the sophistication and resignation endemic to an amateur hip hop karaoke night—even a world championship, and one as spirited as this. Along with co-judges Buckshot and Peter Rosenberg, BDK appraised the skills of 12 competitors, each of whom performed individually to a crowd of over a thousand people at New York's Irving Plaza. Initially, the main competition seemed to be between Doni D and crowd pleaser Dashaun, but dark horse Jessica ultimately prevailed.
