The Ziegfield Theater was at capacity Monday last for the world premiere of Martin Scorcese's latest 3D venture, Hugo. The film, which stars Interview's November covergirl Chloe G. Moretz and the precociously dapper Asa Butterfield, is based on the richly imagined children's bookshelf darling, The Inventions of Hugo Cabret, by Brian O. Selznick. Scorcese's masterful adaptation was not only an homage to the book, but to cinema itself, offering old and young viewers alike a window into a filmmaker's love affair with his own medium. After the screening, Scorcese, Selznick, Moretz, Butterfield, and fellow co-stars Sir Ben Kingsley and Sacha Baron Cohen joined guests for dinner and drinks at the Metropolitan Club. Tony Bennett and wife Susan, Spike Lee, Fran Lebowitz, Albert Maysles, Courtney Love, Stephen Colbert, and Steve Buscemi were among those wining and dining in the club's grand halls Monday night. It was a perfect start to the holiday season: gowns (like Courtney Love's red stunner) swept the floor, ties were on straight, and each flute of champagne received an encore. The filmmaker and friends mingled late into the night, and life imitated art: Moretz and Butterfield, now close friends, trailed through the crowds that had gathered to toast them, plans afoot.
