Last week, China's first gay pageant, scheduled to include a Mr. Gay China contest, with the winner going on to the international Mr. Gay pageant in Norway, was cancelled by police at the last moment. The police claimed the event organizers hadn't "applied according to procedures" to run the event. I'm aware that some parents may be disappointed by a son's choice to not further the family name, but I say the cops could have shown more support for all the proud examples Chinese civil duty, as they are unlikely to add to the population problem their one-child policy is meant to solve. Maybe it was just the planned underwear segment of the contest?
In honor of what could have been, this week's playlist is total kitsch. Aside from the Beijing's FM3 (Buddha Machine), Carsick Cars, Joyside, or Taipei's Sugarplum Ferry, its still difficult (at the moment) to find contemporary Chinese indie rock. Unsurprising, given the government's strikingly old-school attitudes.
