Soundclouds of the Underground: Sharing is Caring Edition

ABOVE: DOUGIE F.

With an infinite number of websites dedicated to hosting tunes for the laptop-wielding masses, music truly lives online. However, the web’s bottomless pit of blogs isn’t the only place to troll for mp3 treasures—some of the newest and most exciting (Internet-friendly) artists can be sought out via Soundcloud, the online stage that allows musicians to promote and distribute music around the world. In this weekly column, expert Internet sleuth Alex Chapman goes into the depths of the music-sharing site, in hopes of shedding light on emerging acts, as well as sharing some digital diamonds in the rough.

As much as Soundcloud can be about what you’re listening to, who is listening to what also carries a great deal of significance. Soundcloud is a social media platform at its core, allowing users to share tracks from artists they believe in. We decided to take investigate some of our favorite artists’ recent shares to get an idea of what they’re listening to—the result? Some damn good finds.

Amon Abdallah: “4 Get”

Who: There’s essentially no information about Amon Abdallah. The enigmatic producer popped out of the blue with four tracks all aptly beginning with “4.” He’s already amassed a fair amount of followers given the 18-hours he’s existed. His unembellished, creeping beats are a perfect fit for Soundcloud listeners of the moment.

The Song: Shared by producer Sango, whose sound is similar in taste, “4Get” is a slow-riding jam that snaps hard with its percussion, keeping its listener engaged further with a melodic, muffled sample.

Current Project: Keep your eyes on Amon’s Soundcloud to see where else he pops up online.

Dougie F: “She”

Who: Gaining attention for his energetic verse atop the Brenmar-crafted “Award” (released by Fool’s Gold earlier this year), Dougie F’s turnt-up delivery and innovative production choices are setting him apart in the vast sea of new rappers.

The Song: “She” was shared by the multi-talented Uniique, whose co-signs are never in question. The track has a smooth, fun summery vibe that can still maintain the adrenaline-fueling trap aesthetic, giving Dougie space to really flow.

Current Project: Stay up to date on Dougie F via Facebook

Felicita: “Tails”

Who: Felicita falls under the umbrella of artists like Sophie, who tweak and turn out the normal conventions of pop, fast forwarding us into a soundscape so ridiculous in its futurism that it makes us giggle and booty-pop simultaneously.

The Song
: Future-pop trailblazers PC Music (with whom Felicita is affiliated) recently shared “Tails,” a glittery dance-jam fueled by high-pitched repetitive phrases fit for an Atari game.

Current Project: Keep up with Felicita on Facebook
