Exclusive Video Premiere: ‘Tonight,’ Phebe Starr

Written while away from home, Australian singer Phebe Starr’s song “Tonight” expresses both the freedom and the frustration of traveling. Her hypnotizing voice sings about becoming lost in dreams, along with a synth-pop backing track. In the video for the song, which we are pleased to debut below, Starr lies starkly awake in bed, and by bringing a male lead into the video, she introduces an additional level to the story that is left untold by the lyrics alone.

“The video tells a part of the story that is inconclusive when the song is played by itself,” Starr tells us. “The video speaks where the song can’t.”

The video introduces symbolism at its finest with an entirely whitewashed set: white makeup, white bed sheets, a white kitchen. Aside from sausage, steak, and colored knives, we are brought into Starr’s own dreamscape. She communicates her vision without clichés. “There is something so thought provoking about meat. It is so offensive, yet there is a fragility that encapsulates the human experience,” Starr says. “I like to ingest a part of my heart and thoughts without spelling it out.”

Her thoughts and heart are certainly present throughout the video—but much like a dream, exact meanings and messages are left open to interpretation. Starr released well-received singles last year, including “Alone With You” and “Jurassica,” and her official debut EP Zero was just released this week.
