STRFKR’s aim has never been traditional success or celebrity within the music industry. In keeping with their cheeky name (pronounced Starfucker), the Portland-based outfit makes music that entertains and invites dancing; however, if one listens past the energetic beats, a much more profound and at times somber message can be found.

“Satellite,” STRFKR’s newest single off of their forthcoming LP Being No One, Going Nowhere (out November 4 via Polyvinyl Records) is the band’s latest effort to marry thought-provoking content with a groovy dance tune. It was among the first songs written for the album, and premieres exclusively below. As vocalist Joshua Hodges (who formed STRFKR in 2007) recalls, he was sitting inside to avoid the California heat, reflecting on being raised as a Catholic, and wrote about the guilt that came with it.

“I wrote it pretty quickly, sitting on my bed during a hot spell in L.A., waiting for the sun to go down so I could go outside,” says Hodges. “To me, the lyrics are kind of about morality and whether it’s subjective and imposed or natural. I think at the time I was just thinking a lot about shame and how useless that generally is for us, especially in regard to our sexuality.”

According to Hodges, this theme extends beyond “Satellite,” which bodes well for Being No One, Going Nowhere. While STRFKR’s 2013 release Miracle Mile did delve into darker themes of fear and tragedy, “Satellite” highlights how the band has grown in the three years since; it acknowledges the past, accepts it, and looks toward the future.

BEING NO ONE, GOING NOWHERE (POLYVINYL RECORDS) WILL BE RELEASED NOVEMBER 4, 2016. FOR MORE ON STRFKR, VISIT THEIR WEBSITE
