New Again: Ally Sheedy

Monday marked the 30th anniversary of a very important occasion: on March 24th in 1984, five fictional characters—a jock, nerd, weirdo, rebel, and queen bee—spent their Saturday in detention in John Hughes’ The Breakfast Club. If that is not enough to make you feel old and decrepit, above is a picture of Ally Sheedy (the weirdo) from our December 1984 issue.

Momentum is the operative word for Ally Sheedy’s career, which has progressed non-stop since her first performance with American Ballet Theater at the age of six. Six years later, she wrote the bestselling children’s book, She Was Nice to Mice, which led to writing assignments for The New York Times, The Village Voice, and Ms. magazine. The last few years have been spent pursuing marquee-size print, starring in Bad Boys, War Games, and Oxford Blues in breakneck succession. Add to the list this winter’s The Breakfast Club (dubbed “The Little Chill” during production), and the upcoming features Twice in a Lifetime with Ann-Margret and St. Elmo’s Fire, and the method to Ally’s mad success becomes clear: never stop.
