Casting Call: The Dive

In which we suggest who should star in the next big adaptation, remake, or historical film.

Francis Lawrence, director of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Mockingjay, is rumored to be collaborating with Jennifer Lawrence on a romantic drama based on the true story of international diving stars Audrey Mestre and Francisco ‘Pipin’ Ferreras. Produced by James Cameron, a long time diving enthusiast, the movie will chronicle the mysterious death of French-born Mestre, who attempted to set a world record from a fatal height of over 500 feet. She was 28 years old.

Mestre’s story has been chronicled twice, once by her husband, who published The Dive: A Story of Love and Obsession in 2004, and once by Carlos Serra, a diving partner of Ferreras and co-organizer of Mestre’s record attempt. Serra’s book The Last Attempt, which was published in 2006, blames Ferreras for knowingly sending his wife into the dive without the proper air tank. His account of the couples’ relationship details a rocky marriage spoiled by jealousy and competitiveness.

The film has all the ingredients for an enthralling drama: a complicated love affair, extreme sports, competition for international fame, and a mysterious death. Here are our casting suggestions to ensure this movie has everything it needs to fulfill its potential.
