Casting Call: The Characters of Bob Dylan

In which we suggest who should star in the next big adaptation, remake, or historical film.

Now 74, Bob Dylan is one of the world’s most influential and prolific living singer-songwriters. Over the course of his 50-odd year career, the iconic musician has released 37 studio albums, as well as another dozen albums of live or unreleased recordings, and won 11 Grammy Awards. Dylan was an important voice for social change in the 1960s, and songs like “The Times They Are A-Changin'” became anthems for a generation of civil rights activists.

Recently, Amazon announced it is developing a new TV series inspired by the characters, themes, and music of Bob Dylan’s songs. Josh Wakely, who has already required the rights to all the lyrics and compositions in Dylan’s extensive catalogue, is set to write and direct the series. As one of
the most well known figures of the American folk revival movement, Dylan represents a genre that pays homage to folk music and its tradition of storytelling through lyrics. Songs like “Simple Twist of Fate” imagine a fictional story, while others, like “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll,” call attention to real events.
