The Depth of Sacai

Japanese designer Chitose Abe’s studies in contrast for her label, Sacai, typically lead to a riot of print, texture, and fabrication. For Spring 2016, she pushed her concept of the hybrid further: quotidian objects like bandannas and souvenir scarves were rendered in prints on a series of sophisticated, multi-layered dresses, some topped with scarves and sheer jackets that gave a look the depth of mille-feuille; stripes evocative of craft blankets snaked down tops and pieced-together skirts; gold embroidery, with the negative spaces laser cut out, constructed a capelike coat, a minidress, and the front insert of a jacket.
