Taschen Shows Some i-D

Cheers to the 1980s, a time of social, economic and cultural change. We saw hostile takeovers, mega-mergers, many deaths of music’s greatest; ET phoned home, MTV killed the radio star, and, in the summer of 1980, “The One Issue of i-D” magazine was born, there to comment on the fashions and lifestyle of the next 30 years.

What started out as a two-color cover, stapled together in founder Terry Jones’ house and distributed out of the back of his car, has become the iconic wink-and-smile style spread to which the top names of fashion, music, art and film have lent their faces. Spanning three decades of supermodel, i-D has featured the no-name street-cast cool-girls of the eighties (Madonna, anyone?), the no-last-name-needed girls of the nineties (Kate! Naomi! Heidi! Helena!) and the need-to-know girls of the new millennium (Lara Stone, Agyness Deyn, Freja Beha), each with one eye closed and the other looking to the future.

i-D celebrated its 15th birthday with a silver blocking mirror cover, making anyone who picked it up the star and declaring themselves “Famous for Fifteen Years.” The 200th issue celebrated a throwback to its first-ever cover graphics, in contrasting hot pink and black, swapping out celebrity for a little history. Now, rounding out its 30th year, i-D released The 30th Birthday Issue with covergirls Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Lady Gaga all labeled “then now next”—leaving it to you to decide which is which, or accept that they are all here to stay. In tandem with the anniversary, Taschen has released i-D Covers 1980-2010. The book features every cover ever printed, with quotes from and questions for the covergirls, stylists, and photographers who were all there to make it happen. Pat McGrath, Jeremy Scott, Steven Klein, Nick Knight, Coco Rocha, KAWS, and endless others all speak to Jones and fashion director Edward Enninful throughout the 300-page atlas of shoots about their experiences and accomplishments—and they’re not afraid to play favorites.
