Happy Monday! Here's our compendium of pop-culture news you may have missed while you were doing more important things over the weekend.
• Further strange developments took place in the murder case of Hollywood publicist Ronni Chasen. After being confronted by police, a person of interest took his own life on Wednesday, but local news station KTLA announced on Sunday that the gun used in the suicide doesn't match the murder weapon. • Prince William and Kate Middleton had their official engagement photos taken by Mario Testino, who photographed Princess Diana a month before her death for Vanity Fair. [Telegraph]
• This was the least-attended post-Thanksgiving weekend for box-office sales since 1997. Tangled opened on top with a modest $21.5 million, displacing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, which came in second with $16.7 million. Rounding out the top five were Burlesque, Unstoppable, and Love and Other Drugs, each at under $10 million. [Box Office Mojo]
• Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum performed a very rare set at the Schoolhouse in Brooklyn on Saturday. Pitchfork has the set list and a link to hear five of the songs. [Pitchfork]
• Black Swan opened in 18 theaters over the weekend and earned a record for its studio, Fox Searchlight—$77,459 per venue. This weekend, it expands to at least 60 locations. [THR]
• Kate Gosselin and her eight children will be guest co-stars on Sarah Palin's Alaska on December 12, an episode we're predicting could be appropriately termed "mama grisly." [Politico]
• The European Film Awards were dominated by Roman Polanski's thriller The Ghost Writer, which won six awards, including Best European Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor (for Ewan McGregor). Polanski is still under house arrest, and accepted the awards via Skype. [Vulture]
