Last night at the kickoff of the W Hotel Downtown's Summer Jam DJ series with Refinery29, it looked suspiciously like DJ Mia Moretti and her party partner, violinist Caitlin Moe, had coordinated outfits. Both paired high-waisted bottoms (leather shorts for Moe, salmon-colored trousers for Moretti) with crop tops—very My So-Called Life, and very on-trend! "We're together all the time!" Moretti laughed when we asked whether they'd chosen their outfits together. "It's like we don't really have a choice!" Moe chimed in.
Moe and Moretti have been playing shows together for two years, since a chance meeting at Ella on the Lower East Side. "I had been trained classically for so long, 15 years. . . I needed a change. My friend suggested I DJ and play different events that normally a violinist wouldn't play," Moe explained. Now she saws along (to Robyn's "Indestructible," notably) while Moretti turns tables —and though their sets are impressively tight, the duo says they don't really practice, just discuss set lists ahead of time. "We travel so much together, we're together all the time. In the car or on the plane, we'll be talking to each other and decide then," Moe said. "We don't really have time to rehearse—it's more in the moment. We like it to be different every time."
Also hanging out on the hotel's terrace bar, with a couple of friends from high school in tow, was Joe Manganiello, who co-stars on True Blood with this month's cover star, Alexander Skarsgard. The show's fourth season just premiered two weeks ago—what's he doing in New York? "I'm done for the season!" he replied. "I finished shooting last Friday, and then Monday, they called to see if I could come out to shoot White Collar. I'm shooting one episode—I went to college at Carnegie Mellon with Matt Bomer, he and I are old buddies from college, so they called to see if I would come out and do an episode. I'm playing a bad guy!," he added, apparently excited for a break from his True Blood good-guy role. "I'm a felon who gets out of prison and starts flirting with his old ways again. And Matt's character, who is a former convicted felon working for the government, is trying to hunt me down."
JOE MANGANIELLO
What can we expect from this season of True Blood? "There's going to be some tension between Alcide and Sookie, definitely," Manganiello said. "Alcide's romantic situation becomes very complicated this year, more complicated than it was last year. There are some obstacles in the way."
And as for our other burning question, well... "For the first seven [episodes], I think I'm naked three out of seven. In terms of baseball numbers, those are pretty great."
