Although the dreary weather never let up outside, the atmosphere at the VPL store opening Thursday evening was positively sunny. Guests of all ages, including Anne Slowey with her new baby, shook off the rain and relaxed with a cocktail while admiring the new collection by VPL designer Victoria Bartlett. Known for her body-conscious sportswear, the athletic nature of the clothing was highlighted by the store's use of vintage gym equipment, including an old-fashioned punching bag and collection of gymnastic "still rings." Co-host Arden Wohl entertained guests in an amazing pink outfit, made in part with repurposed silk stockings. Showing off the different pieces, Wohl remarked on her friend's talent: "She's so brilliant she has her own [fashion] vernacular." The designer herself was busy acting as a one-woman welcoming committee, warmly greeting everyone with a hug. Wohl commented on the comfortable party atmosphere. "It's such a nice crowd, everyone's a friend—it's like a family around her."
After making the party look effortless, Bartlett, arm-in-arm with a friend, conceded there might be a higher powerat work here. "It's a great space—I got the deal of my life. Sometimes they say there's a guardian angel over you." Her friend nodded, "Someone's looking out for you." Laughed Bartlett, "Someone is! Seriously, it's weird."
THE VPL STORE IS NOW OPEN AT 5-7 MERCER STREET.
