Manhattan Sport

Who says polo isn't an urban sport? Sunday, on the small strip of land a short ferry ride from the southern tip of Manhattan, spectators endured the shirt-drenching heat to mingle, sip champagne, and watch the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic under the New York skyline. Benefiting Sentebale, a charity founded by Prince Harry to elevate the living conditions of children in Lesotho, the prince's Blackrock team squared off against Nacho Figueras (the face of Polo Ralph Lauren) and the Black Watch squad. Everything was going well until Harry took a royal tumble off his pony in the opening "chukker"—that's period to you or me—leading to his team's 6-5 defeat in overtime. Though the match was the centerpiece of the event, there was still plenty of action to be had off the polo grounds.  Extravagantly-chapeaued women flaunted their headpieces for all to see, and a few brave dandies managed to keep their suit jackets on during the peak of the afternoon heat wave (I even saw an improvised pair of Veuve Clicqot bottle cap cufflinks on one of them).  A predictably sweater-vested Russell Simmons was seen leaving the VIP tent during a lull in the festivities, and Susan Sarandon worked the crowd on crutches, the result of an ankle sprain on a charitable mission to Haiti. Despite the temperature, spirits remained high throughout the afternoon as an army of champagne toting staff promptly refilled each guest's flute. How they feel today, however, is another question entirely...
